John Deere X320 was manufactured in Horicon, Wisconsin, USA. This tractor is in the X300 series produced by John Deere with X330, X370, and X350 as some of its members. X320 is a compact tractor made for lawn garden mowing and the ability to handle other activities with the right attachment like snow blowing, aeration, and loading among others.

Its turning radius makes it ideal for small garden operations. This two-wheel drive tractor had two engine variants. The first engine was used between 2006 to 2010 before it was replaced with another engine from 2011 to 2015. If you want to know everything about these engines and the other features of this tractor, keep reading.

Features of John Deere X320

John Deere X320 Tractor

Physical Specifications

This is a small garden tractor with the ability to do more than just mowing. It weighs just 256kg without the mower deck and surprisingly, it is hardly touted as a compact tractor considering its size and weight.

Its height is just 43 inches and its width comes in at 38.5 inches, while it is a fairly long tractor at 72 inches. Like the majority of tractors, the X320 sports an open cabin structure which gives the operator more room but lesser protection from the elements and accidents.

Engine

There are two available engine types for the John Deere X320 tractor. Now, before it gets confusing, the tractor was not made with two engine options. Rather, the first engine was replaced with another engine in the latter years of its production. Now you can get any of the engines you prefer by buying based on the production year.

  1. Kawasaki FH661V

The first engine to be fitted to the X320 tractor from its year of manufacture in 2006 to 2010. It comes with a decently rated 22 HP, has a V-twin 90° air-cooled engine and it is a  4-cylinder internal combustion engine that makes use of gasoline fuel to power it.

Its displacement is rated 44.3 cu-in, its bore and stroke 2.85 × 2.99 inches and uses a spark plug rated NGK: BPR4ES. Its oil capacity is pegged at 1.9 L which is enough to carry a good amount of oil. The recommended oil type for this tractor is 10W-30.

  1. Kawasaki FS651V

This engine replaced the FH661V engine in 2011 up until the X320 was discontinued in 2015 and to be honest, they share a lot of similarities. Nevertheless, there are still a couple of differences that set them apart.

While it uses gasoline fuel, oil type of 10W-30, has a displacement of 44.3 cu-in, 22 HP rated engine power, and an electric engine starter like the first engine, it sports a larger oil capacity of 2.1 L, bore and stroke of 3.07 × 2.99 inches and a compression ratio of 8.2:1.

Transmission and Chassis

John Deere X320 tractor has a chassis of 4×2 2Wad but this means very little if you don’t know what a chassis does. The chassis is the base frame that holds the components of a tractor together and the X320 tractor has a chassis that allows for easy movement around tight corners.

John Deere X320 has no gears making it easier to operate, this is made possible because it uses a hydrostatic transmission also known as K58 Tuff-Turq. The maximum forward speed is 10.0 km h while the reverse speed is 5.6 km h. It also has infinite forward and reverse gears.

Tires

Very little is always said about tractor tires but this is not because it is less important than the other parts. The tires are the strength of a tractor and John Deere knows this that is why the tires for the X320 tractor are made to fit with ratings matching the needs of a garden tractor.

The front lawn tire is rated 15×6.5-8 while the rear lawn tire is rated 22×11-10.

Pros and Cons of John Deere X320

Everything has an advantage and a disadvantage and the X320 is no different. Matching them will help you make a better buying decision.

Pros

  • Compact: even though it is not always mentioned, this tractor is lightweight and small
  • Easy to operate: this is made possible by its Tuff-Torq transmission system
  • Two engine options: being able to choose is always good and this tractor allows you to choose between two engine types by buying based on the year of production
  • Anti-skid wheels: these wheels are firm on the ground and do not skid off especially in wet conditions which can be quite dangerous for both the operator and anything around
  • Powerful engine: for its size, 22 HP is great and should cover a lot of small garden operations effortlessly

Cons

  • Too many plastic parts: this will significantly reduce its durability as they get broken easily
  • Parts manufactured in various countries: while this may not be an issue on its own, but it makes it difficult to ascertain its quality
  • Expensive: not only is the tractor hardly affordable, but you may also need to spend even more to get some other additional attachments you may like

Price

Being a new model tractor made recently, its original price may seem more expensive than tractors made in the later 1900s. It was sold for $4,099 in 2010. Today you can get a decently used X320 for as low as $2,500 and as high as $3,800.

Conclusion

John Deere X320 is small and compact, has amazing horsepower for its size, is easy to operate, and has two engine options you can choose from among other things. It is however quite expensive for its size and has too many plastic parts that can reduce its durability. If these are not so much of a problem, you can go ahead and enjoy this wonderful tractor.
